Background
Ghana Somubi Dwumadie (Ghana Participation Programme) is a four and half-year programme focused on disability and mental health in Ghana, funded by UK aid. The programme, led by a consortium including Options, BasicNeeds-Ghana, Kings College London, Sightsavers, and Tropical Health, has been dedicated to promoting the rights and inclusion of people with disabilities, including those with mental health conditions. The programme's key areas include strengthening policies and systems, scaling up accessible mental health services, reducing stigma and discrimination, and generating evidence to inform policy and practice.
Since its inception in 2020, Ghana Somubi Dwumadie has emphasised a user-led approach to disability work, ensuring that the voices and needs of people with disabilities are at the forefront of the programme's strategies. This approach has been combined with policy-level interventions, engaging with the Government of Ghana to influence public policy and institutionalise awareness of key disability issues. The dual strategy of user-led engagement and policy advocacy has been crucial in achieving significant progress in creating a more inclusive environment for people with disabilities in Ghana.
